Two years ago today, in the small African country of Rwanda, a baby girl was born. I don't know what I was doing that day, July 1, 2008. Even before that day, my life and the life of that baby girl were planned by God. My life's path, which began on the other side of the world, would lead me to Africa. It would lead me to love someone as much as I have ever loved. It would lead me to care for strangers more than I have ever cared, true compassion. It would lead me to cry for my nation, which I love, tears of frustration. And it would show me that God is real. He is more loving and more active in our lives than I ever knew. The path of that baby girl and my path have intertwined, along with that of my husband and her siblings and many others. I am so thankful that I have the privilege of being Malaika's mother. People often say that we are a blessing to her and that we have saved her. No. She has blessed us more than we could ever possibly bless her. She has saved us from our own misconceptions and ignorance. Someday, this little girl will do great things!

Malaika, you are amazing and beautiful. You remind me that we are made in the image of God. I love you. Happy 2nd birthday.

But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8
